Record Crowds, Record Partners, Lots of Free Family Fun Highlight of 2024 FCCS FamJam Back to School Bash

Kicking off the back-to-school season in a big way and with lots of free fun, Franklin County Children Services and KidsLinked.com teamed up with nearly 100 community partners and organizations to present the 2024 FamJam and Back to School Bash in August. 

That’s the largest number of community partners who’ve joined in on this annual agency festival since its inception more than a decade ago.

"We can't do this work alone. It takes the entire community," said FCCS Executive Director Chip Spinning. "It's great to have so many children and families coming out to participate in FamJam."

This year’s event was also highlighted by record crowds of families and children from throughout Franklin County, with an estimated 8,000 people stopping by at some point during the three hours. More than 14,000 RSVP’d online to attend.

For the second year, this free event filled Columbus’ Goodale Park. Among the community partners at FamJam this year were the Center for Family Safety & Healing, Franklin Learning Academy, Franklin County Office on Aging, Columbus Public Health, Oasis Foster Care, Youth Advocate Services, Caring for Kids, Young Lives, Franklin Co. Child Support Enforcement Agency, St. Vincent Family Services, The Village Network, The Bair Foundation, Action for Children, Power 107.5, COSI, Franklin County Auditor, Columbus Collegiate Academy, Road to Success Academy, and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, which offered an Imagination Art Zone.

During the event, children were able to pick up free backpacks, books, and school supplies and parents could grab valuable resources and information. 

The event also featured exciting activities and entertainment - bounce houses, magic shows, a bubble park, kids games and prizes, face-painting, food trucks, character appearances, a family selfie station, and so much more.

Adding another layer to the strategies designed to keep Franklin County Children Services staff and visitors to FCCS buildings protected and safe - and championing a new “Safer Together” approach to security - the agency has welcomed its first official Director of Safety and Security. FCCS Volunteers Comfort, Care for Children during Crisis

As a volunteer in Franklin County Children Services’ Crisis Center, Michalle DiGiovine fondly recalls dining on “pretend food” and playing “restaurant” with a promising culinary staff of five young children as they tried out recipes prepared on a plastic range.  “It felt good that they could come to me - a stranger - to pretend and laugh a little,” she said, remembering how she connected with the youngsters, all the under the age of 10, who had just endured an extremely traumatic experience at home. As January is National Mentoring Month, it’s a great time to recognize the Crisis Center volunteers who help protect children by allowing them to escape from tumultuous situations for a time and feel safe and cared for.  Mentors and volunteers play an important role at FCCS in surrounding children who come into the agency’s care with kindness and support, letting children know they are not alone. FCCS Visitation Keeps Families Connected

When young people can no longer stay with a parent, it’s still critically important to help kids maintain connections to their loved ones. And over the past year, Franklin County Children Services has coordinated thousands of safe visits to connect children and separated parents - and used the time that families are together to connect them with additional support.  Regularly-scheduled family visitation is an opportunity for children who are in out-of-home care and their parents to spend quality time together, with the ultimate goal of family reunification.  In 2023, FCCS has coordinated more than 6,000 of these family visits over the course of the year.
